Learning English in Manitoba

Two white mugs, each one has a fall leaf in it.

As school starts up, many of us begin to focus on our own learning. For some, that means improving on English skills.

Please note there are MANY options for English language learning. These are simply the ones that I recommend.

The First Stop…

  • WELARC
    • This is where people go when they need an English language assessment.
    • Many programs/schools require an assessment.

If you took an IELTS or CELPIP this may not be needed.

Other Options for Language Learning

If you can’t make it to an in person class, below are some alternative ways to improve your English.

  • Duolingo
    • I’m a huge fan of Duolingo. It’s free and easy to use.
    • You can download the app on your phone and use anywhere.

  • Podcasts
    • There are many different language learning podcasts. Chose the one that’s right for you and listen everyday.
    • One I recommend:
      • The Newcomer Collective
        • This is a great podcast to hear about Canadian newcomer experiences ( you will need intermediate English or higher)

  • Outschool
    • This is an online teaching platform made for kids.
    • They offer a variety of online English courses and others classes as well.
    • I have used Outschool with my own kids and it is awesome for learning.

  • Udemy
    • You can purchase English programs to work on at your own pace.
    • I have used Udemy myself and highly recommend it.
    • TIP: Wait for the sales and you will save ALOT of money.

  • TV
    • Do you have a streaming service? (Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc.)
    • Next time you watch a show:
      • Put on the English subtitles
      • Watch the show in English with your first language in the subtitles.

  • The Library
    • In Manitoba you can get a FREE library card at your local library.
    • Choose books with large print as they are easier to read.

  • Your Workplace
    • Many workplaces are starting to see the importance in having language classes for employees at work.
    • Speak to your workplace, many are willing to cover the costs if there are enough people interested.

It takes about 500 hours of English to increase to the next Candian Language Benchmark level (there are 12 levels).

If you want to improve you have to put in the work. Pick a few of these resources, use them everyday and see your English improve!
