✈️ Thompson Regional Airport – Gateway to Northern Manitoba

Happy to be back and writing blog posts! It has been a minute (or two!)

But I’m back today chatting about another great employer/community if you are looking for opportunities to further your career.

The Thompson Airport is (as you guessed) located in Thompson, Manitoba. Thompson is about 6 hours north of Winnipeg, Manitoba. There’s a direct highway that takes you all the way north (Highway #6). It’s the highway that takes you to multiple places in Northern Manitoba (The Pas, Flin Flon, Gilliam and Thompson).

About the Thompson airport

If you’re thinking about moving to northern Manitoba for work or adventure, Thompson Airport is your key connection. Just a short drive from the city, it links Thompson to Winnipeg and other northern communities, making travel, supplies, and emergencies easier to manage.

The airport serves both passengers and cargo, supporting local jobs, mining, and essential services. With ongoing upgrades—including a modern terminal and improved runways—it’s ready to keep the region connected year‑round, no matter the weather.

For anyone relocating for work, Thompson Airport makes northern life accessible, safe, and connected. Not only that, but there are many opportunities for employment with the different companies that work out of the airport (aviation, cold weather testing, etc.).

🌲 Thompson, Manitoba – The city of opportunity

Thinking about moving to northern Manitoba for work?

Thompson is the largest city in the region and a true hub for employment, services, and community life. With a population of around 13,000 and a trade area serving 50,000+, it’s where many northern opportunities are concentrated.

The city was built around mining, and today the industry still drives many jobs, from operations and engineering to administration and support services. Beyond mining, Thompson also offers work in healthcare, education, government, retail, aviation and other service sectors, making it accessible for both newcomers and Canadians with a range of skills.

Thompson combines employment opportunities with modern amenities—schools, healthcare, shopping, recreation—and access to the great outdoors, from lakes and trails to winter sports. The city’s location makes it a vital connection point for surrounding communities, and Thompson Airport ensures travel and logistics are easy, even in the far north.

For newcomers ready to build a career and a life in Canada’s north, Thompson offers a welcoming community, steady employment, and a unique northern lifestyle.

But you have to be open to a different climate and life…

  • It does get colder and the cold lasts longer (you are in Northern Canada!)
  • You get snow and often alot.
  • You will need a drivers license, unless you plan to take the bus or fly every time you want to go South
  • It’s a slower pace of life. Being in a remote city means most places are hours away. You have to be okay with that.

But what you get…

  • Beauty
    • I’ve lived in Thompson, the area around the city is amazing
  • Tons of outdoor activities
    • If you love the outdoors this is the place. Hiking, fishing, camping, snowmobiling they have it and more.
  • Community
    • Because the city is in an isolated area there is a strong community feeling. People are involved, they help each other.
  • Employment Opportunities
    • This was the reason I initially moved to Thompson. As a brand new teacher I was able to get a job right out of school. Most people I knew who stayed South had to substitute teach for at least a year before getting anything. By my second year I was head of my department.
    • The same is for many industries and opportunities in the North (just look up jobs in Thompson and you will see!)
