If you are looking for a place that you can “try out” without having to sign a 1 year lease Gimli, Manitoba is the town you are looking for.
Located in the Interlake region of Manitoba (between two of our largest lakes), and nestled right beside Lake Winnipeg is an amazing, supportive and welcoming community that you didn’t realize you needed.
In Episode 5 we sit down and chat with Melanie Specula who is the Newcomer Program Development Coordinator for the area. Over the past few years they have welcomed and helped find jobs for around 350 newcomers.
What’s Different about gimli?
- They have temporary housing that people can start out in. Gimli has a dormitory where newcomers can live in and pay month to month. It allows people to experience the area, find employment, and decide where they want to live permanently. For others the dormitory has given them the ability to save money and purchase a house faster than would have been possible in a city.
- The dormitory has more than just affordable housing, there is a driver that can assist people who don’t have licenses. There is a community where newcomers can meet others.
- Gimli is very ideally located. There are many towns within 45 minutes. Winnipeg is only one hour away. Many people live in Gimli but work in other towns.

What types of Jobs are there???
- Tourism – Gimli is a tourist town, it grows alot in the summer
- Manufacturing – There is alot of manufacturing in the Interlake region, all of which have a variety of positions

- Healthcare – There are MANY jobs in healthcare along with non-health related jobs in hospitals, clinics, care homes and others.
