As I write this, we have about 5 weeks of summer left. Manitobans love their summers and we make the most of all there is to offer.
A great way to increase your language skills and learn the culture is to get involved in local activities. If you are a Manitoba newcomer this post is for you!
Below are the top 7 things that I do every summer with my family.
1. Send Kids to Camp
- Camp is a big thing in Manitoba. There are day camps (kids go home each night), sleepover camps (kids stay for the week), and even family camps (families go to together).
- Most camps cost money, but there are ways for you to have your child go without paying. Some options are:
- Ask if you can volunteer in exchange for paying.
- Ask about options for families who can’t afford the camp fees (many camps have a variety of options)
- Apply to the Sunshine Fund for camp fees to be covered

2. Camping
- Manitobans LOVE to go camping. Tent, trailer or RV, we love to go and sleep in the wild.
- There are two different types of campgrounds
- Provincial – To book these you must visit the Parks Reservation Site.
- Private – These have their own websites. Some examples are Lilac Resort and Rubber Ducky Resort.
- I would also recommend liking the Facebook page Manitoba Camping.

3. Go to the Beach
- The best part about beaches in Manitoba is that most of them are free. (Except in provincial parks)
- Check out Road Trip Manitoba to see some of the top ones.
4. Hiking
- If you are near a beach or campground, chances are there is a good hiking trail nearby. Plus, like beaches they are free.
- Visit Travel Manitoba or Hike Manitoba to find one that works for you.
5. Drive-In Movies
- This one is very special to me. My Grandma owned a Drive-In movie theatre. I spent my summers at her home working and eating popcorn.
- Some great ones to check out are:
- The Stardust in Mordern
- The Shamrock in Killarney (this is the one I use to work at)
- Big Island in Flin Flon
6. Food Tour
- In Manitoba we love our food. With so many different cultures there is always lots of choices. What’s more fun than exploring new restaurants to try?
- Some sites I recommend joining are:
- Manitoba Small Town Drive-In Review (Facebook)
- Wpgfoodlovers (Instagram)
- wpgeats (Instagram)
7. Attend a Festival or Fair
- Pretty much every small town has a festival or fair. Food, music, rides (and sometimes a rodeo), what could be better????
- Many festivals/fairs offer lots of free activities as well.
- Visit Travel Manitoba to see when are what’s going on!
These are my top 7, but I would love to hear what other people think is a Manitoba summer activity!
